‘More than a Gap Year’
The Discipleship Year is an opportunity to deepen your love of Jesus Christ, by being immersed in God’s word, filled with God’s Spirit, through teaching, practical ministry in a local church, residentials and serving at New Wine events.
NWDY is for anyone aged 18- 29 looking to:
Develop a secure understanding of your identity in Christ
Grow in reading and understanding God’s word
Increase in godliness, self-discipline, and joy
Be equipped to use your spiritual gifts to serve God’s church
Spend a year in church-based ministry

Some of our commonly available placement areas are, Youth, Children & Families, Students, Worship & Production, Operations & Admin.

A normal week will include:
A day of teaching based at St John’s Harborne
Ministry experience at your placement church, for two or four days. This experience can be in one ministry if you have a particular interest, or across a variety
There are also two national residentials in November and April.

Cost - The 2027/28 Discipleship Year will cost students £1,650, which covers all your teaching and training, including the two residential trips. If you are paying in full, fees are due by the course start date. If you opt for paying in eight instalments, the first payment is due in August.
Some placement churches may offer bursaries towards the cost of the year.
Accommodation - If you need accommodation, your placement church can arrange for you to live with a church family.

Application Deadlines
There are three application rounds for the Discipleship Year, with places offered following each deadline. It’s not first come, first served within each round—everyone who applies before the deadline will be considered equally. However, as Hub and placement spaces are filled throughout the year, your chances of finding a suitable placement decrease the later you apply.Applying early gives you the best chance of getting matched to the right Hub and placement for you.
Applications close after each round, with interviews taking place shortly after. Later rounds will only run if places remain available.
Application Deadlines for 2027-28:
Round One: Monday 30th November 2026
Round Two: Friday 12th March 2027
Round Three: Tuesday 8th June 2027
Final Deadline: Friday 20th August 2027
Application Deadlines for 2028-29:
Round One: Monday 29th November 2027
Round Two: Friday 10th March 2028
Round Three: Tuesday 6th June 2028
Final Deadline: Friday 18th August 2028
